About the Author
Edward Powys Mathers (1892-1939) était un poète et traducteur talentueux. C’est lui qui introduit en 1924 les mots croisés cryptiques en Grande-Bretagne dans les pages de l’hebdomadaire The Observer. En 1934, il publie un florilège d’énigmes sous le titre The Torquemada Puzzle Book. Outre des mots croisés d’une redoutable difficulté, ce volume contenait des contrepèteries et des jeux littéraires. L’ouvrage se termine par les cent pages de son unique roman La Mâchoire de Caïn.
