" Une lettre s'est un baiser qu'on s'envoie par la poste. Quand je suis là, à quoi bon le facteur ? " écrivait Victor Hugo à Juliette Drouet, le 22 mai 1837. Des cinq romans épistolaires que nous publiions ici, chefs-d'œuvre d'une forme littéraire raffinée dont s'enchanta la période classique, trois développent le thème de l'amour et l'absence : l'amant n'est pas là, et l'amante se plaint, s'analyse, rêve son amour. Dans les deux autres, les deux voies se font entendre, ici sur un ton enjoué - mais l'aventure finit mal - là dans une perspective parodique, au dénouement conventionnel et heureux.
