RABELAIS, François (1494-1553), fils d´un légiste de la Touraine, devient successivement moine franciscain, secrétaire de l´évêque de Maillezais et bachelier en médecine par l´université de Montpellier (1530). Il publia plusieurs travaux d´archéologie et médecine en latin, mais surtout des œuvres satiriques dont les protagonistes sont deux géants, Pantagruel et Gargantua. L´ensemble de son travail offre une vue modérée du protestantisme, opposée a la tyrannie, au dogmatisme et à la guerre. Pantagruel (1532) raconte la prodigieuse force et appétit d´un populaire géant. Le roman décrit sa fabuleuse naissance et adolescence, son passage par différentes Universités françaises, son expérience de Paris et ses exploits militaires dans la lointaine Utopie. Ces expériences deviennent autant d´opportunités pour parodier l´exubérance de la Renaissance, pour se moquer de la littérature et de l´enseignement moyenâgeux ainsi que de l´autorité ecclésiastique, tout en affirmant les valeurs humanistiques.
