SHORTLISTED FOR BEST BRITISH BOOK IN THE BRITISH BOOK DESIGN & PRODUCTION AWARDS 2014

SHORTLISTED FOR DESIGN WEEK AWARDS 2014

Like a Gill inscription itself: controlled, full of sexual tension, human, sensitive and with all this, rather wild and a bit unsettling. (Lida Lopes Cardozo Kindersley)

Maud is dedicated to the art of lettercutting. Whilst observing a century-old inscription carved by Eric Gill into the outside wall of a London church, she is mistaken by Edward for a prostitute. She accepts his offer.

Why does a woman seeking the precision and discipline of perfect letterforms abandon herself so recklessly to the undisciplined and all too imperfect world of Edward?

What does rich, hedonistic city banker Edward see in the purposeful and unmaterialistic woman who is at least ten years older than his normal bedmates . . . and one still pining for her husband from whom she is separated?

Lettercutting becomes not just a background, but an analogy for the search for perfection in an imperfect world. Can such shallow beginnings lead to a relationship that carves itself into their souls?

The answer comes as a surprising end to this powerful and witty debut novel.

Review:

Set in Chelsea, this is a beautifully written book – bound with string - about love and its unexpected connection to the alphabet. (The Mayfair Magazine)

What follows isn’t quite the Fifty Fonts of Grey that this opening might lead you to expect, but still it does include just as much discussion of font and letter design as it does rutting, desire and betrayal. (The Independent Arts Blog)

The victory of the novel is . . . something far subtler: its atmosphere. (Quadrapheme Magazine)

A celebration of letterforms. Unsurprisingly the book itself is a lovely object. (Creative Review Blog)

A strange, and sometimes disturbingly powerful, novel. (Shaz’s Book Blog)

Book Description:

Eric Gill’s presence doesn’t just restrict itself to the contents, but pervades the whole look and feel of the book: the heavier than normal paper, exposed spine, sewn binding and “tracing paper” dust jacket evoke the story’s artistic content. The spine title, slightly askew and in some places pierced by thread, suggests hand craftsmanship. Inside, you notice the unusually wide margins and ragged right edge. Story and design work together. The love affair is described graphically and the graphics are designed lovingly. The book is tactile and pleasing tohold, as solid and smooth as a piece of polished stone. There are previously unpublished images of Gill’s lettercutting as well as notes on the typography at the back.
