Joshua Compston s Factual Nonsense gallery in Shoreditch, London, in the 1990s showcased the Young British Artists (YBAs) such as Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk and Damien Hirst, before that movement burst on the global scene with the Saatchi-sponsored Sensation exhibition in 1997. Compston died of an overdose of ether the year before Sensation, in 1996. His close friend, the artist Darren Coffield has been given access to Compston s personal diaries to produce for the first time an intimate and fascinating account of a remarkable man and an extraordinary moment in modern art, when the names who now dominate the international art scene were on the verge of discovery. The book will contain new interviews by Coffield with a number of leading artists and cultural figures.
