About the Authors

Neil Lockhart has had an interest in bryophytes since undergraduate days at Trinity College Dublin (1974-78), where he studied botany and was first introduced to bryology by Dr Peter Pitkin. Habitat survey work with the Wildlife Service (1977-86) encouraged a life-long interest in nature conservation, including a brief stint as founding chairman of the Irish Peatland Conservation Council, and helped him to develop the field skills necessary to later undertake a PhD on the phytosociology of blanket bog flush vegetation at National University of Ireland, Galway. 

He currently works with the National Parks and Wildlife Service where, as a research scientist, he is involved with the assessment, mapping and designation of sites of conservation interest, particularly SACs and NHAs. He lives in Dublin with his wife and two daughters.

Nick Hodgetts is a botanist specialising in bryophytes, which have enthused and enthralled him for the past 25 years. He spent many years working for county wildlife trusts and for the British statutory nature conservation agencies, but decided to become an independent consultant in 2001. Since then, survey work for Rare and Threatened Bryophytes of Ireland has been a major part of his life, with regular periods of fieldwork in Ireland and report writing.  

He is co-author of both the British and European bryophyte Red Data Books, as well as the Mosses and Liverworts volume in the New Naturalist series. Bryophytes have also taken him on collecting trips and conferences to many parts of the world, especially Africa, and he has described a number of species new to scence. He now lives with his wife and family on the Isle of Skye and is working towards a bryophyte Flora of that beautiful island.

David Holyoak holds a PhD on Quaternary environments and biota at the University of Reading. An interest in bryophytes arose during studies of Quaternary moss fossils in the 1970s. This was extended during postdoctoral research comparing English fossil floras with modern arctic vegetation. Following five years of lecturing, David worked as a botanical consultant from 1990 to 2009. He is now retired but continues to be actively involved in the British Bryological Society.
