Following extensive research in St Petersburg, Moscow and Paris, this book reveals for the first time the story of Albert Henry Stopford, Edwardian man-about-town, member of the English aristocracy, dealer in object d'arts, and a regular guest at Romanov dinner tables. In the terrible turmoil of the Russian revolution he risked his life, rescuing Romanov jewels from the Vladimir Palace worth millions of pounds from under Bolshevik noses, and taking back to Britain in his Gladstone bag gems that were destined to adorn the rich and famous - queens, duchesses and film stars. Within months of his return to London, he was embroiled in a homosexual scandal and a trial at the Old Bailey; he died a broken man. Ninety years later, as an intriguing postscript to this extraordinary story, William Clarke unearthed an unclaimed Romanov bank account in London in the name of Grand Duke Andre; it has now been claimed by more than a score of his heirs.

Review:

This is a riveting account, highly recommended for all devotees of the Romanovs. --The European Royal History Journal, July, 2009

From the Back Cover:

This is the untold story of Edwardian man-about-town the Honourable Albert Henry Stopford. A member of the aristocracy, Stopford was accepted in all the best salons of London, Paris and St Petersburg and counted society hostesses, Russian nobility and members of the Ballets Russes among his closest friends.
Stopford was a dealer in objects d'art with both Faberge and Cartier, and as a regular guest at Romanov dinner tables and a personal friend of two of the men accuses of the murder of Rasputin, he relished his role as the eyes and ears of Whitehall in the Russian capital. Indeed such was the trust bestowed upon him by his peers, it would lead him all the way to the inner sanctum of Tsar Nicholas II.
Amid the turmoil of the 1917 revolution, Stopford risked his life to rescue Romanov jewels worth millions of pounds from under the noses of Russia's new authorities. Once back in Britain, gems would emerge from his shabby
Gladstone bags that were destined to adorn the rich and famous - queens, duchesses and film starts - for years to come.
