When to listen to the CD? Imagine coming home from a hard day, knowing that listening to your CD for half an hour will take you into that blissful, quiet state when you feel so comfortable, calm and relaxed. All the stress from your day seems to melt away leaving you refreshed, calm and confident. How does the "Relaxation and Stress Management CD" work? The use of hypnosis has been around for centuries. It is a natural state similar to daydreaming. In hypnosis, you are extremely relaxed, calm and have a heightened sense of awareness and concentration. It is a time when you sink into your subconscious instead of using your conscious mind. Your subconscious is the part of you that: stores all your memories, emotions and patterns of behaviour; is responsible for all bodily functions, e.g., breathing, immune system, blood pressure; and, is an untapped resource of confidence, creativity, natural intelligence and imagination. Self Hypnosis is a safe and gentle way of opening the door to the subconscious to bring about positive change to your way of thinking, to your behaviour and to your body. "The Relaxation and Stress Management CD" uses the natural state of hypnosis, deep relaxation and the power of suggestion to enhance your life and wellbeing. The subconscious mind does not know the difference between reality and imagination (ever had deja vue or a dream that felt as if it was real?). Therefore through Hypnosis (similar to guided visualisation) you have the opportunity to train your mind to learn and rehearse new responses to situations and so react accordingly in real life.

Maggie Howell Founder of Natal Hypnotherapy Having learnt self-hypnosis while pregnant, to help with the birth of her first child, Maggie Howell went on to give birth to her eldest son, Joseph, at home in a relaxed and comfortable environment: "When Maggie first mentioned that she was going to use self-hypnosis for her first labour, I was sceptical as to whether she would be able to achieve this. During her labour I was happy to be proved wrong. Her ability to remain relaxed, totally in control, yet fully communicative throughout the experience was impressive." Judy Aitkin, NHS midwife. Ria Haydon, NHS midwife agrees: "Maggie's demeanour was calm. She appeared to be 'sleeping' during most of her contractions, breathing slightly more deeply as they peaked. She used no pharmacological methods of pain relief and conducted her labour and delivery entirely under self-hypnosis. She appeared to experience no pain and very little discomfort throughout." The midwives were so impressed with the effects that they asked Maggie to talk to local antenatal clinics about her experiences. Maggie then decided to give up a successful career in the events and conference industry and train to be a Clinical Hypnotherapist. The aim then, and now, was to use the power of hypnosis to help women overcome their fear of birth and enable them to be more in control and manage the physical sensations involved in child birth. Maggie developed the Natal Hypnotherapy CDs as a result of her research and hypnotherapy work with individual mothers and antenatal groups. She has since used the techniques herself for the births of her second and third son. Maggie is a Doula (trained birth companion) and currently works with midwives, antenatal groups and hospitals running workshops and classes. She also runs 'effective birth preparation' courses for couples teaching them how to use hypnosis for an instinctive birth as well as training workshops for birth professionals. Maggie didn't set out to become a birth expert - in fact, she's an unlikely convert. She was a busy international sales executive who only reluctantly attended a self hypnosis course to help her with her first birth. But she was blown away by the mind's ability to control the body's response to pain and 3 months later, she had a peaceful, manageable birth at home without so much as a paracetamol - to the surprise of her and her NHS midwife who said: "Maggie appeared to be 'sleeping' during most of her contractions, breathing slightly more deeply as they peaked. She used no pharmacological methods of pain relief and conducted her labour and delivery entirely under self-hypnosis. She appeared to experience no pain and very little discomfort." It was the turning point in her life. Inspired by her experiences, she trained to become a clinical hypnotherapist and left her job to pursue her new life goal: to teach other women the techniques which help them have a positive birth. The result was Natal Hypnotherapy(t), the UK's leading provider of hypnosis for childbirth. The philosophy is simple: to help women have a better birth. Maggie's work is revolutionising women's birth experiences by teaching them to overcome fear and work with their bodies during birth. Maggie says: "In our society, fear has become the overriding emotion pregnant women feel about childbirth - something fuelled by TV depictions and horror stories other mums love to tell. We have not been brought up to see birth as a positive thing, so we've lost confidence in our own ability to give birth naturally and so go into it fearful and anxious - feelings which cause much of the pain and complications in birth." The facts speak for themselves: Natal Hypnotherapy(t) users have an average caesarean rate up to half the national average and are recommended by 97% of users. Medical research has repeatedly found that hypnosis reduces surgical intervention, use of pain medication, mum's pain perception, and labour times. Maggie says: "This could revolutionise the way women give birth. If we could give every pregnant woman in the UK a Natal Hypnotherapy(t) CD to listen to we could save the NHS a fortune and change birthing culture!" It may not be on prescription yet, but Maggie's work is already changing the birthing world. Thanks to Maggie, effective birth preparation is no longer only available for those with the luxury of money and time. Her range of self-hypnosis CDs for pregnancy and birth, and new book "effective birth preparation - your practical guide to a better birth" are accessible for everyone, and designed to fit into a hectic life. From terrified teenage mums to women planning their sixth home birth, the techniques have helped women from all walks of life have a more positive birth. Today, Maggie has personally trained over 500 midwives, has a network of practitioners who teach the techniques in comprehensive workshops all over the country, regularly appears as a birth expert across the media, and has used the techniques for the births of each of her five sons plus helping in excess of 100,000 women have a better pregnancy and birth experience!
