SPARRK is a one-to-one assessment that enables teachers to assess pupils' phonological knowledge and its practical application. It examines skills prerequisite to successful reading and spelling and can be used with pupils of any age to establish which skills need to be mastered. It can also be used as a diagnostic tool with pupils who are displaying difficulties with these early skills. The assessment explores: Concepts, Syllable, Rhyme, Initial Phonemes, Final Phonemes, Medial Phonemes, Blending and Segmenting. SPARRK is a diagnostic assessment. It takes between 10 and 30 minutes to administer and provides the teacher with a profile of phonological strengths and weaknesses. It also offers practical suggestions for developing subsequent programmes of work for individuals or small groups and allows for recording and monitoring of progress.
