With growing public pressure and increasingly stringent environmental legislation, the waste industry is now being called upon to develop more sustainable methods of dealing with refuse. Coupled with moves to reduce reliance on landfill as a disposal route, biological treatment will increasingly become adopted as a standard requirement for the vast majority of putrescible wastes. Biowaste and Biological Waste Treatment examines the present, and likely future, state of biological waste treatment. The book falls naturally into three parts. The first covers the nature of biowaste, waste treatment in general and the regulatory framework which governs it. The second looks at the technologies and approaches available, while the final part examines the various policy questions and local, social and economic factors which affect the implementation of biowaste initiatives.

From the Author:

What the book is about, why and for whom it was written
Waste is scarcely a glamorous subject; mention ‘environmentalism’ and most people conjure images of dolphins or rainforests, not landfill sites and compost heaps!

I became involved in biological waste treatment largely by accident. As a child I never really thought about what happened to the refuse we threw out every week. We had a compost heap of sorts, and I had a vague notion that our dustbin contents went to what was then called ‘the dump’ but it never dawned on me that the two things were in any way related. Likewise, throughout my studies of biology, I do not recall ever being aware that a whole profession existed to make practical applications of biodegradation. For me, decomposition was something which happened on the forest floor, or at the bottom of the ponds frequented by the gulping toads and fragile newts that I loved so much. Having been plucked, almost literally, from those amphibian infested waters, I now know differently.

In Biowaste and Biological Waste Treatment, my aim was to try to share that knowledge and examine the present, and likely future, state of biological waste treatment. Often seen as something of a Cinderella science, burgeoning legislation and better public awareness mean that waste has been increasing forced up the political agenda, to assume greater importance as a necessary facet of modern waste management.

The book falls naturally into three parts. The first section covers the nature of biowaste, waste treatment in general and the regulatory framework which governs it. The second looks specifically at the technologies and approaches available, while the final part examines the various policy questions and local, social and economic factors which affect the implementation of biowaste initiatives.

The product of many years practical experience in the field, I would like to think it might be of interest to the general reader. Clearly its natural readership is amongst waste management practitioners, policy-makers, local authority officers, researchers and students of environmental science.

I truly hope they will find it of some use.

Gareth M. Evans, County Durham, 29th March 2001

About the Author:

As well as teaching an Environmental Biotechnology course at the University of Durham, Gareth Evans founded ZygoTec to research, develop and implement technologies for the utilization of biomass and biowaste.
