To Petra with love: The Petra Tegetmeier collection of works by David Jones : paintings, drawings, engravings, inscriptions and carvings. INTRODUCTION 'I suppose I didn't have a normal upbringing,' reflected Petra Tegetmeier when I had the pleasure of meeting her a few years ago and talking with her about life in Eric Gill's communities at Ditchling, Capel-y-ffin and Pigotts. Petra had been raised at a far remove from the comforts and conventions of early twentieth century Britain. Her childhood and youth were marked by a lack of state education, by life with a sexually curious father, and by contact with the idiosyncratic and often remarkable men that Eric Gill attracted to his communities. At the time of my visit, Petra Tegetmeier happily showed me many of the items included in the current exhibition, items that had been in her possession since the l920s. It was during that period that she had been wooed by one of the most interesting and exceptional British artists of the last century, the poet and painter, David Jones. Wooden spoons or wooden crucifxes, the art works exhibited all declare the premise that was fundamental to David Jones - that things are made as a sign of something, in this case, as a sign of his love and devotion to Eric Gill's daughter, Petra, whom he wooed, in his own halting fashion and particularly through his art. So what we see in this exhibition are works made, not in the anonymous manner that art works are so often created, but lovingly made for a particular purpose and person. Surely it was an act of pure love which prompted Jones to give Petra Gill one of his finest landscapes, Capel Landscape, of 1925. These items were given to Petra with love; they were made by and because of love.
