This book describes the personal account of engineering problems overcome by the Talyllyn Railway's Chief Engineer, John Bate during his long period of association with the railway. The Welsh narrow gauge steam railway celebrated 50 years of Volunteer Preservation last year in 2000. The many pictures along with the text, portray the hardships and perilous nature of the enteprise back in the early years of the 1950s and the struggle and final success of the railway. The story is well told and brings the railway to life. A recommended book for all interested in railways and especially members of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society.
