Synopsis

The second volume of the heroic Place-Names of Fife series covers the central parishes between the Rivers Leven and Eden. The parishes here included are Ceres, Cults, Falkland, Kemback, Kennoway, Kettle, Largo, Leslie, Markinch, Newburn and Sconie. The book was published in 2008. The series sets new standards for county place-name surveys anywhere, but is virtually a pioneer ‘breaking of the soil’ for a survey of Scottish place-names. Each parish contains two maps, a modern one and the Ainslie Fife one from 1775. Each of the minor names within the parish are also analysed, including some which only appear in the historical documents. Each parish has historical introduction (virtually a history of the parish), each name has early forms, references and interpretation. Each volume contains a full index and bibliography. This particular volume also contains editions and translations and discussions of the two St Andrews Foundation Accounts and the St Andrews Terrier. The series is utterly superlative, and published at a bargain price, subsidised by generous grants from academic charities. Place-name scholars, local and family historians, medievalists, well, you can’t hold your head up high unless you own a copy!
