This book is not only useful as an introduction to the whole subject of Late Medieval Netherlandish sculpture, it is important for its scholarly catalogue and study of no fewer than 109 previously unpublished pieces in locations throughout England. The catalogue attempts to find attributes and cultural contexts for these pieces, often for the first time, and the book includes a study of the various ways in which these sculptures found their way to England, including nineteenth-century antiques trade led by Pugin. The work is illustrated by 242 plates, including some in colour, and represents the fruits of many years of research by the author, who is lecturer in the history of art at the Open University. There is a full bibliography and an index. The glorious colour dustwrapper features the early-sixteenth-century oak Altarpiece of the Life of the Virgin at Radwinter in Essex.
