Review:
Cameron McNeish is one of Britain's best known outdoor writers and broadcasters and he has walked, climbed and skied in many parts of the world.

This book describes what he considers--for various reasons--to be the best hill walking in Scotland; a bold claim indeed for a country with such an immense variety of scenery and mountains. The book itself is excellent reading--the author has listed a number of walking routes in six geographical areas of Scotland. The walks come in differing degrees of difficulty, from "Zero" to "Serious Hill Walking".

McNeish is an entertaining writer--the introduction to each section details a wealth of information about the history and folklore of the areas and their inhabitants; indeed, where else in Britain will you find feral goats? The route directions are given in the same easy style--it is not too difficult to recognise that you are having a conversation with McNeish rather than merely reading a book, as the directions are interspersed with more pieces of historical trivia and graphic descriptions of the scenery.

This book is enjoyable reading even if you never actually take the trouble to complete any of the walks. For those who are familiar with any or all of the walks described, one must bear in mind that these are the "best" in the eyes of the author, and while you may not agree that this is so, there is no doubt that many of the walks are situated in some of the most magnificent scenery in the world. --Ben Naylor
