The basis of this publication was a report on the geomorphic characteristics of three channelized streams in northern Mississippi that was prepared for the Soil Conservation Service, U.S.D.A. (Mississippi). The purpose of the project was to apply a geomorphic approach to the study of these channels in order to determine if their future behavior could be predicted. Furthermore, the goal of this book is to aid land managers and conservationists by taking into consideration incised channels, gullies, and entrenched streams from the geomorphic perspective in hope that this approach will:1. Determine the evolutionary sequence or stages of incised channel evolution.2. To develop criteria for the recognition of potentially stable valley-floors and channels.3. To recognize the stage at which conservation techniques will be most effective.4. To develop a philosophy or strategy of incised-channel management that is based on geomorphic principles.5. To develop a methodology for rehabilitation of incised channels. This book is now part of WRPs Classic Resources Editions.
