The most stately of the Impressionist painters. Edgar Degas (1834-1917) took inspiration from everything around him to create his compelling body of work. Through his innovative use of traditional media, he developed a new artistic vocabulary over a long and remarkable career.

Telling Degas's life story through his art, author Gerhard Gruitrooy examines the painter's early influences under the tutelage of Louis Lamothe and the first blossoming of his talents in portraits of family and friends.
Degas is perhaps best known for his dramatic portrayal of ballerinas, both on and off the stage. Vividly described and depicted in these pages are popular masterpieces ranging from The Green Dancer, which portrays a fleeting moment of glory on the stage, to Ballet from 'Robert le Diable'. which contrasts light effects and sweeping brushstrokes to depict a ghostly dance.
Toward the end of his life, Degas's palette intensified and increased in vigor and expressive power, culminating in works like the sumptuous and intimate paintings of women at their toilette as well as in sculptures of the tiny dancers he had observed and painted for so long.
