9781880684887: The Violent Foam: New and Selected Poems

The Violent Foam includes selections from Zamora's previous acclaimed books and poems written since 1993. About her earlier book, Clean Slate, MultiCultural Review noted "Zamora was shaped by revolution and gender, but her voice is true and universal, transcending political boundaries and sounding clear notes of sanity in times of madness." Her new poems, beautifully translated by the poet George Evans, continue her lyrical, clear-sighted vision of the world with humor and gentle irony.

LASSIE
(Autobiography)

It's true. I was faithful.
My one desire was to be patted
on the head
by a disdainful hand.
And happily wagging that tail
I ran in circles, barked, and rolled around
to welcome the master.

About the Author:

Daisy Zamora was a combatant in the national Sandinista Liberation Front and served as Vice-Minister of Culture after the 1979 triumph. Her first book of poems won the National Poetry Prize in Nicaragua in 1977. She has two previous books in English-Clean Slate (Curbstone) and Riverbed of Memory (City Lights). At present she lives in SF.

From Booklist:

A Sandinista combatant before the 1979 revolution and Nicaragua's vice-minister of culture after it, Zamora is, unsurprisingly, a poet committed to social justice. But she is no ideological ranter. Her poems in this dual-language selection are concerned with inequities of class, sex, and international economics, but they stem from humanitarianism rather than political dogma. She writes spare, simple, virtually reportorial poems about working women and women who leave their abusive husbands. Just as sparely, but with acidity, she discusses "Requisites for a Beauty Queen," presents a "Test to Know Your Husband" and "Advice for Attracting Your Husband," imparts "How Your Man Sees You," and even offers counsel "For Leaders and All Other Men." If there is discontent and protest in her reportorial and satiric poems, her poems about family members and others she knows personally and her poetic mentors argue that her discontent and protest arise defensively, out of the particular love of family and community. A small-country revolutionary, she sounds a lot like a large and powerful nation's reactionary localist patriot. Ray Olson
