Broadbent describes the evolution of Colonial houses and their builders during the colony's foundation in the late eighteenth century, through the golden years of the 1830s, to the depression of the 1840s. These early houses are read as manuscripts, revealing the motives and the follies of their builders. Through the villas, cottages, bungalows and mansions examined in the book, a unique insight is given into early colonial society, its aspirations, its culture or philistinism, its gentility and snobbery, its extravagance and failures.

Synopsis
A comprehensive history of domestic architecture in New South Wales during the late-18th century. It examines the houses that were built and the influences on their design - not only those of contemporary British architecture and the impact of climate and distance, but also of the social influences which motivated their builders. This study explores the changes in form and style during this time, describing the colony's picturesque cottages, spreading bungalows, Gothic villas and Grecian mansions. It is extensively illustrated with paintings, early photographs and plans.
