Synopsis

The purpose of this book is to help you trace your Irish Ancestors. In the main the book deals with the two principal aspects that there are to researching your family tree: the records and the repositories in which those records are held. A glance at the contents will show the five basic records, and the principal repositories in which they are held. These basic records will help you trace your ancestors back to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The additional records that there are available are dealt with. For those who are not in Ireland many of the records referred to can be obtained by contacting a repository directly or by going to a local genealogical repository or by accessing the Internet. The best genealogical repositories that I am aware of are the Family History Centres of the LDS Family History Library. Many genealogical societies have their own libraries; a person should seek to make contact with such societies. A local public library should be a guide to what is available and may have some records available. The Internet is what I feel genealogy has been waiting for. The potential lies in the amount of data, which will become available and the opportunity to share information and exchange views with others. Material is being added to the Internet every day and the time will come when most genealogical research will be conducted through it. The book may be used in conjunction with my websites, in all cases websites are given where available, and such are linked to from my own site. In addition I have now established other sites: www.IrishSurnames.net for general information on Irish surnames; www.IrishSurnames.info for information upon specific surnames in Ireland. The information upon surnames is based upon my book Surnames in Ireland.
