Walter Cave; Arts and Crafts to Edwardian Splendour Author: Judith Patrick Published by Phillimore & Co Ltd (ISBN 978-1-86077-735-6) This new work covers the career and legacy of Walter Cave FRIBA, who was a contemporary and friend of CFA Voysey, Edwin Lutyens, Reginald Blomfield and Mervyn McCartney. Walter Cave FRIBA worked as a sole practitioner from 1888 into the early 20th century and was a senior member of the Art Workers Guild for 27 years and prime mover of the Quarto Imperial Club. He regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society and was also President of the Architectural Association in 1907 and 1908 and much involved with Royal Institute of British Architects committees. Hitherto undocumented this new work establishes Walter Cave as an important figure, contemporary with those already recognised as 'Arts and Crafts' designers and architects. His interest, however, is somewhat broader as he covered domestic and industrial buildings, factories, blocks of flats, concert halls, the design of furniture and even that of a piano. The book itself is an illuminating and comprehensive study of his architecture and designs and is therefore essential reading for students and architectural historians, lecturers and researchers of the Arts and Crafts and Edwardian Revival styles. This well chronicled book has 107 illustrations including drawings, plans, and contemporary and recent photographs of country houses with their gardens and estate buildings. His urban design included industrial buildings, flats and concert halls. Much early work included furniture and interiors. In his day he was an advocate for exploiting new technology within both an arts and crafts and historicist context including the use of electricity, ventilation and heating installations. He also pioneered motor-house designs and was Consulting Architect for a complete retirement village near Woking in Surrey
