Jean and Ken Smith interviewed many former miners and their families who generously contributed their memories.

Ken Smith is a sub-editor on The Journal, Newcastle. He has written several books on Tyne shipbuilding and engineering. Jean Smith, a retired community midwife, is an historical researcher and skilled interviewer.
