Synopsis

For many parents the loss of a child through neonatal death or stillbirth is their first close encounter with bereavement but they often find there is inappropriate advice or counselling. With personal testimony from many who have experienced loss, this book gives positive and constructive help. It covers a range of common medical conditions that may contribute to stillbirth, the difficult problems of dealing with the loss of a child in intensive care and coping with the loss of babies for whom post-mortems could offer no satisfactory explanations.

Synopsis

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is for many the last stages of the infertility investigation. At this point is has been established that the woman cannot conceive naturally. Fertility problems are thought to affect around one in ten couples and it is a growing phenomenon. This book deals with aspects of infertility and IVF through the testimony of those who have experienced it. Their accounts illustrate the various medical conditions that could cause infertility and the treatments available up to and including IVF. Couples share their thoughts and feelings on the difficulties that may arise. It also looks at the non-medical issues such as costs, the uneven provision and lack of a coherent policy, and attitudes of the medical profession.
