Carrie and Nick are war-time evacuees, billeted in Wales to stay with Mr Evans, who's a bit of a bully, and his poor timid sister Aunt Lou. Councilor Evans is mean and overbearing and to escape from their regimented lives, Carrie and Nick find sanctuary at Druids Bottom, where their friend Albert Sandwich is billeted. Here they find true hospitality and friendship with Hepzibah green and the strange Mister Johnny who can talk to animals but not to human beings. Years later Carrie returns to Druids Bottom with her children.

About the Author:
Nina Bawden is one of today's best writers for both adults and children. she has often used her own childhood experiences in her books - Carrie's War is set in the mining valley in Wales where she lived as an evacuee in wartime. She studied philosophy, politics and economics at Somerville College, Oxford and finished her first novel the year after she took her degree. She won the Guardian Award for Children's Fiction for The Peppermint Pig.
