Synopsis

This book provides a unique opportunity to see an inspiring range of portraits from contemporary photographers selected from thousands of submissions. The works included are not only about the sitters but also reveal the outstanding skill of the photographers, in capturing a moment in time, and conveying something of the spirit of those photographed. This year marks the introduction of In Focus, a display of new works by an internationally renowned photographer that will be exhibited alongside those of the finalists. The works are reproduced in the catalogue, together with other well-known examples by the photographer and an interview about his life and work. This year’s In Focus photographer is Pieter Hugo, who was chosen by the Gallery for his uncompromising, insightful and occasionally provocative approach to portraiture. Fully illustrated in colour throughout, the book also features all the selected entries, comments and insights from the judges and interviews with the prizewinners.

Review

There are many gems in the 50 photographs here. Peter Zelewski s close-up portrait of Nyaueth, a woman he encountered in a London street, draws you in from across the room; Felix Friedman s portrait of his baby son sleeping on a table is immediate and tender; and Sarah Lee s shot of a man glimpsed through a rain-drenched chip-shop window has a peculiar pathos. --Evening Standard 3 star review for Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize by Ben Luke

More illuminating are curious images of people at work...they show how reportage blurs into portraiture, when the emphasis is placed on the human subject. --The Telegraph 3 star review from Christian House

Whether the photographer captures his subject in the moment or whether the image has been meticulously planned, it is a sense of honed vision that most strikes --The Times 4 star review from Rachel Campbell-Johnston
