Model Aircraft Aerodynamics - Softcover

9781854861214: Model Aircraft Aerodynamics

Synopsis

This is the latest edition - fully revised and updated - of the standard work on aerodynamic theory, as applied to model flight. Everything is explained in a concise and practical form for those enthusiasts who appreciate that a better understanding of model behaviour is the sure path to greater success and enjoyment, whether just for fun or in competition. The revisions for this edition reflect the significant developments in model aircraft during the last few years, e.g. powerful miniature turbojet engines; vast improvements in motors, propellers and batteries for electric powered models; more very large and very fast models; etc. This fourth edition - twenty years after the first! - created an opportunity not just for text revisions but a complete redesign with larger page size and improved redrawn plans and diagrams.

From the Author

New edition now available
The new, fourth edition, is now available and was published in June 1999. It is on a larger page size with much improved layout and design.

This is a work on aerodynamic theory, as applied to model flight. It explains everything in a concise and practical form for those enthusiasts who want a better understanding of model behaviour. The latest revisions reflect developments such as powerful miniature turbojet engines and dynamic soaring. Photographic illustrations are included, all the diagrams have been re-drawn by the author, and there is new material to cover recent research and flight experiences. Almost every page has been altered in some respect to improve clarity and style although the main content is necessarily the same.

The book remains the only one of its kind in the English language.

The author is an experienced and active model designer, builder and flier, as well as a glider pilot with about 1500 hours solo flying experience.

Synopsis

This is a revised and updated work for aeromodellers. This book explains aerodynamic theory as applied to model flight in a concise and practical form. It is for those enthusiasts who seek a better understanding of model behaviour, whether the models are flown purely for fun or in competition. The third edition has been updated to include: the lastest wind tunnel research at Princeton University, USA, during the late 1980s; an explanation of the effects of wind on model flying; an expanded section on tip winglets and crescent wing planforms; expanded coverage of the centre of lateral area theory; examination of the practice of trimming sailplanes using the dive test, and the dangerous phenomenon of "tucking under"; expanded coverage of air brakes, including the "crow" or "butterfly" mix system; and over 100 pages of appendices.
