A Welsh mining family move to a new community
Moving and settling in a new community has been a feature of family life throughout history, but particularly so since the Industrial Revolution. At the start of this story in 1895, Welsh speaking seven year old Susanah, her forceful father, her timid mother and her brothers, travel to find work and home in the mining communities of the North. Here she meets Jonty Clelland, a gifted and rather pompous boy, son of a politically minded mother and father who wish to change the world for the better. Jonty will become a pacifist in the Great War. In the next twenty years of industrial change and the cataclysm of the War Susanah and Jonty's lives weave together then part, as they each experience the stresses and strains of surviving those years with dignity and a degree of joy. Susanah's early life is very loosely based on that of my own Grandmother. Jonty was inspired by documentary research on an early preacher, a fiery inspirational young man who led a group of radicals to protest against being called up to kill their fellow men. It was my delight to bring these two together in my purely fictional story. I think this story says something about love, war and man's inhumanity to man. I do hope you enjoy it.
