Book Description Condition: Molto Buono. Studio editions, London ; 1990; 9781851704095 ; Rilegato con titoli in oro al dorso, sovracoperta ; 36,5 x 27 cm; pp. 93; ntroduction by Edouard Julien. With over 30 full colour plates. ; Presenta leggeri segni d'uso ai bordi (senza mancanze nč lacerazioni, piccole imperfezioni), interno senza scritte; Molto Buono, (come da foto). ; With the invention of chromolithography around 1850 came a revolutionary system of colour printing which led to the birth of the coloured poster. Among the great masters of this craft - Daumier, Cheret, Grasset, Mucha - there stands one man who surpasses all in artistic stature: Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, a remarkable painter who introduced original and bold ideas into this branch of design. From 1891 until just before his death in 1901 he concen- trated his unique skills on lithographic techniques and in nine years had produced a formidable range of prints, thirty-one of which were his superb colour posters. These are faithfully reproduced in this new edition of The Posters of Toulouse- Lautrec', a fine tribute to the peculiar genius of this vivacious artist. His first poster appeared in Paris in 1891 and advertised the famous dancer La Goulue of the Moulin Rouge. It was received by the public with curiosity and astonishment, and, indeed, many of the posters which followed produced a mixed response of shock, controversy and admi- ration. What strikes the beholder of his work, here, is the bold strength and clarity of execution, the diversity in his capacity for invention and the skill with which he evokes an atmosphere bringing figures to life, capturing the subtle characteristics of the human and animal form in circus, cabaret and theatre. From the garish gaiety and glamour of La Goulue's and Jane Avril's dancehall to the more sombre shades of drama such as 'Le Pendu' and 'La Gitane' Toulouse-Lautrec manifests in brilliant flourishes and gentle brushstrokes the comic and tragic sides of human nature. It is easy to be amused by his posters without understanding their real artistic value, but this book provides a fine introduction which attributes to these wonderful posters the quality of praise they deserve. ; L immagine se disponibile, corrisponde alla copia in vendita.
