Gavin Madden, a young ex-City banker, arrives on the Isle of Stone in 2010, charged by the British government with an unusual task: to find out if it would be possible to transform a small, remote Scottish island into an important recovery centre for injured war veterans and other disabled people, and a training centre for paralympics.

The job is never going to be an easy one. Back in Whitehall there are other government agencies with conflicting agendas, setting out to frustrate him. The island itself is a place of many secrets, of strange traditions and more than a hint of skulduggery - in fact, as he gradually learns to his cost, with a dark underbelly of crime and corruption.

And then he falls in love. She is Camryn, a much admired local beauty, a 'queen' in the eyes of the natives, a fitting prize for some likely son of the island, but not, absolutely not, for an outsider like Gavin. As their love grows, danger begins to close in around them. The island shows its dark side, and events take their disturbing course, moving swiftly to a wholly unforeseen climax ...
