The Dalai Lama's message in this book is as renowned as he is himself: that compassion is essential for individuals and for the world. This is very much his subject for, when we think of His Holiness, we immediately think of the compassion he embodies, and to which he has devoted his entire life. He suggests we pay close attention to the way we respond to everyone and to everything around us, and explains how caring for others can be a profound source of happiness on an individual level, which can then be extended outward in wider and wider circles. From here, he goes on to describe basic mistakes (such as hatred towards others) that lead us into personal turmoil and interpersonal disruption. Then he asks us to examine the nature of consciousness so we understand how the transformation of our attitude is possible. Finally, in typically practical fashion, he suggests how we can implement compassion in our daily lives, and go on to live with greater care and concern for all beings.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the spiritual and political leader of Tibet. Today, he lives in exile in Northern India and works tirelessly on behalf of the Tibetan people, as well as travelling the world to give spiritual teachings to sell-out audiences. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
'Compassion is the key.'
Drawing from a long tradition of Tibetan techniques for transformation of mind and heart, How to be Compassionate offers specific insights, examples and practices that we, and our world, sorely need. In these pages, His Holiness shows us how to pay attention to our own hearts - to our orientation to everyone and everything around us. He points out basic mistakes of attitude that lead to inner turmoil and how we can correct them to achieve a better future.
His Holiness reveals how caring for others is the best way to overcome the selfishness that lies at the root of all problems; he shows us how compassion can be a profound source of happiness in our own lives, and how it can be extended outward in wider and wider circles. He also provides specific exercises so that we can develop the insights and skills that lead to transformation. As we become more compassionate human beings, our neighbours, friends, parents, spouses, children, and even
our enemies experience less anger, prompting them to become more warm-hearted, kind and harmonious. Compassion is the key to overcoming anger, hatred and selfishness - the primary obstacles to happiness - and to changing our world.
