"Two major events in the field of international human resource management (IHRM) took place in 1990. The first was the founding of the International Journal of Human Resource Management (IJHRM) by Michael Poole [...] the second major event of 1990 for IHRM was the publication, by Peter Dowling and Randall Schuler, of the first textbook on IHRM, which had as its main focus, HR in multinational corporations.

International Human Resource Management: Managing People in a Multinational Context(2008) is now in its 5th edition [the current author team consists of Peter Dowling, Marion Festing, and Allen Engle Sr.] and the IJHRM felt that the time was right to take stock of the text book and its role in the IHRM field.

In summary, while maintaining a consistent focus over time, there have also been important changes in the content and structure of the Dowling et al. book. These changes capture changes in the IHRM field over the years and have also served to help push the IHRM field to recognize these changes and their importance.
