Post-traumatic headache is the most common symptom after mild/moderate brain injury. Similar to the characteristics of naturally occurring headaches, it is multi-faceted in nature and includes neurophysiological, psychological and social aspects. Consequently, headache has an enormous impact on the quality of life of the sufferer. Effective headache treatment has a focus on all aspects of the pain and the needs of the individual.

This book describes a cognitive-behavioural program which was developed as part of a research project in a brain injury service. It is based, firstly, on the evidence provided by the outcomes of this research project. The interested reader may study the literature associated with this research for which the references can be found at the back of this volume. Secondly, this headache therapy guide is the result of clinical experience and the application of cognitive behavioural therapy to patients who experience complex difficulties following a brain injury.

Review:

An excellent and concise overview of post-traumatic headache with comprehensible hands-on practical treatment recommendations derived from decades of clinical experience. --Mark Obermann, MD, Consultant Neurologist, Senior Scientist, Department of Neurology, University Hospital Essen, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany

This elegantly written book offers stimulating reading for scientists and therapists alike with valuable insights into the management of this complex condition. Dr Gurr's knowledge and expertise shine through each section as she shares the fruits of her long experience. The freshness of her approach and user-friendly style bring this challenging subject to life. --Meherzin Das, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Lead Dorset Community Pain Service; Visiting Fellow, Bournemouth University, UK

If clinicians who work from within a multi-disciplinary psychological framework to help patients with post-injury headaches could have only one book on their bookshelf, this is it. Dr Gurr has managed to produce a wonderfully readable, richly illustrated, and very 'hands on' practitioner resource. One of the major strengths of the book is that it concludes with a considerable number of practical resources provided as appendices to further inform and guide everyday clinical practice. This book is extremely well-integrated as a result of more than a decade's tireless personal dedication by the author to research and everyday clinical practice in this important area of brain injury rehabilitation. A definite 'must-have' for those who work in the field of post-brain injury psychological management and rehabilitation of headaches. --Rudi Coetzer, Consultant Neuropsychologist and Head of Service, North Wales Brain Injury Service, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board NHS Wales, UK

About the Author:

Dr Birgit Gurr works as clinical neuropsychologist in Poole, Dorset, UK, where she is employed by Dorset HealthCare University Foundation Trust, runs a small private practice and lectures at Bournemouth University. The focus of her clinical work are patients with complex neurological disorders including brain injury, stroke, dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy, addiction and other problems. Apart from trying to help her patients to understand their condition through the use of neuropsychological assessments, she is also developing specific treatment programmes to guide their adjustment and recovery.

The work with patients who experience chronic post-concussion problems, post-traumatic headaches in particular has been one of her key interests. She developed a cognitive-behaviour therapy approach by combining knowledge and experience about brain injury, headaches and the psychological difficulties associated with overcoming a traumatic event. The psychological headache treatment was implemented and tested in her service and was found to be very helpful for her patients. The publication of the research on this topic and presentation at the British Psychology Conference and the International Headache Conference caught the interest of colleagues in the field, so that her approach is now used by a number of brain injury and headache services nationally and internationally.
