When 'Aurora Leigh' was first published in 1856, mature matrons claimed to have been corrupted by it, and impressionable young ladies were forbidden to read it. More than a century later Elizabeth Barrett Browning's vigorous and impassioned verse-novel has lost none of its vitality. At the heart of the story is Aurora Leigh herself, an aspiring poet of independent spirit, rebelling against the stifling constraints of Victorian middle-class society and struggling for self-expression; but through Aurora's relationship with both her cousin Romney Leigh, a naive social reformer, and Marian Erle, a woman of the social underclass, despised and abused, the tale exposes the hypocrisy and repressive social attitudes of Victorian England.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was one of the most prominent poets of the Victorian era. Her poetry was widely popular in both England and the United States during her lifetime.
