In this third Neapolitan novel, Elena and Lila have become women. Both have attempted pushing against the walls of a prison that would have seen them living a life of misery, ignorance and submission. They are afloat on the great sea of opportunities that opened up during the1970s. Yet they are still very much bound to each other by a strong, unbreakable bond. From the bestselling author of My Brilliant Friend, Elena Ferrante.

Review:
&quotElena Ferrante's real identity is unknown, but her novels reveal her genius... Ferrante's singularity is to make a glory of introspection and turn it into theatre. There's a dark ardour present in her writing, and a thrilling physicality to her metaphors, boldly translated by Ann Goldstein. She speaks of the anxious pleasure of violence , of desire feeling like a drop of rain in a spiderweb . Her charting of the rivalries and sheer inscrutability of female friendship is raw. This is high-stakes, subversive literature." - The Telegraph

&quotElena Ferrante's magnificent Neapolitan novels trace the relationship between two headstrong Italian women... But these books are more than autobiography by other means. They also look outward, offering a dissection of Italian society that is almost Tolstoyan in its sweep and ambition. They are, into the bargain, extraordinarily gripping entertainment; the plot in this latest installment twists and turns, like a Naples alleyway, towards a sequel-enabling conclusion. Novel by novel, Ferrante's series is building into one of the great achievements of modern literature." - The Independent

&quotFerrante is building up not only a portrait of a friendship but of a society and an era. Nothing is superfluous... The hashtag is entirely apt. I have caught #ferrantefever. - Shiny New Books

'it is a testament to Ferrante's achievement that, at the end of this third book and anticipating the fourth, it seems there s limitless potential for Lina to reinvent herself again... Lina's golden talent could wear thin as a device in the hands of a less skilled writer, but the story that follows over the decades from the friends childhood is too well realised and too well populated with memorable characters for this to be a problem." - TLS

&quotOver the past two decades Elena Ferrante a pseudonym, of course has become one of her country's most exciting and compelling contemporary literary voices. And, as her celebrity grows, so too does the guessing game surrounding her identity."The Guardian

&quotProustian in ambition and scope, written in a limpid, sensual prose whose complex nuances and indelible images are beautifully rendered by Ann Goldstien's translation, Ferrante's three Neapolitan novels depict the emotional and physical life of women, their power and weakness, with a supple precision that has led critics to evoke the écriture féminine of Helene Cixous" - New Statesman

'It was also the year that Elena Ferrante came to wider notice though nobody knew who was behind the name. The third installment of her Neapolitan novels, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, continued her raw exploration of female friendship and ambition, emotional violence and the enduring scars of the second world war on Italian society, and Ferrante continues to guard her anonymity.' - --The Guardian's best fiction of 2014

'The latest of these novels to be translated is Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and it's been named as book of the year by quite a few writers and critics.' - The Irish Independent

'I was reviewing it, so my proof copy is full of scribbles, but the scribble on the final page of Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay says just: 'Wow'. - --Jonathan Gibbs

'Ferrante handles all this with great efficiency in a style that moves easily between laconic scene-setting, dialogue and metaphorical commentary, some of it icily incisive.' - London Review of Books

&quotThere is a savage honesty to the work of Elena Ferrante that is both unsettling and comforting at once. Here is an author who has poured every ounce of herself onto the page." - --The Irish Times
About the Author:
Elena Ferrante was born in Naples. She is the author of The Days of Abandonment, which the NewYork Times called &quotstunning", Troubling Love, The Lost Daughter and the critically acclaimed Neopolitan Novels, which include My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child, published in September 2015. Though one of Italy's most important contemporary authors, she has successfully shunned public attention and kept her true identity concealed.
