Photographed during the summer of 1942 by an onboard war correspondent they show a U-Boat in action in the Atlantic and Caribbean, as the Kriegsmarine teetered on the verge of what turned out to be its ultimate downfall. The finding of these photographs in Yorkshire some 60 years after the end of World War Two has been a great event for historians and those with an interest in the Kriegsmarine. I would also like to say on a more personal note that researching Reinhard 'Teddy' Suhren was a fascinating period. His wonderful family made me more than welcome as did Han-Rudolf Roesing (his ex-commander) Juergen Oesten, Erich Topp and many other U-boat veterans who knew him both personally and by reputation. It has been a pleasure to learn more about this remarkable man.

Synopsis:

Housed at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, England, the Appleyard Collection contains some 360 b&w photographs taken aboard the German U 564 during the course of a single patrol in the summer of 1942. In this volume, independent scholar Paterson presents many of these photographs and uses them to piece together the story of that patrol.
