Synopsis

Born in 1937 in Breckenridge, Minnesota, Fritz Scholder grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota; Pierre, South Dakota; Shawano, Wisconsin; and Ashland, Wisconsin. A prolific artist, his corpus includes works in various media, including painting, sculpture, and print-and bookmaking. He has shown his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions world-wide. Fritz Scholder's work is included in such public collections as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Fritz Scholder: Paintings provides an overview of this important American artist's output in the medium for which he is best known. This handsome retrospective includes essays by Werner Gundersheimer (Director of the Folger Shakespeare Library), Frank H. Goodyear, Jr. (Director of the Heard Museum), and Paul J. Karlstrom (West Coast Regional Director of the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art.)
