Over the past 25 years, research findings have continued to underscore the direct and positive impact of women's colleges--institutions where the academic aspirations of women are the focus of the entire educational community. This book identifies the distinctive characteristics that make these colleges preeminent contributors of achieving women to the wider society. The authors also explain how the lessons and legacies of these institutions have the potential to enhance the education environment at all colleges.

Review:
?...as Taking Women Seriously states, in the reorganization of colleges that has taken place since the 1960s and in Catholic colleges especially, there has been an enhancement of the mission to serve the underserved, seen as students of color from the inner city, single mothers, "returning" women (those over twenty-two) and working women who cannot attend during regular collegiate hours. But the mission statements of these colleges promise much more - an education flowing from the charisma of their founders and striving to form "the moral and ethical conscience of the global community" (emphasis mine). As a stated goal, that takes one's breath away.?-Commonweal
From the Publisher:
Improving Higher Education for Women
Research findings demonstrate the direct and positive impact of women's colleges--institutions where the academic aspirations of women are taken seriously by the entire education community. This book documents the campus qualities, programs, and other characteristics of women's colleges that appear to be key to their production of high-achieving graduates, and the authors emphasive that these "lessons" and "legacies" have the potential to improve the collegiate environment as a whole. The authors also provide a historical overview of higher education for women, along with an assessment of where the higher education of women stands today.
