From the Author

Why live in San Francisco
My career has been as checkered as a cab. I've worked as a filmmaker, a chef, a musician, a broadcaster, a writer -- with undistinguished and indistinguishable jobs in between. But my most satisifying job is my current one -- columnist. I include in this book a collection of columns, anecdotes, aphorisms and remembrances. Naturally, they mostly revolve around my adopted hometown of San Francisco, since I have spent 29 years here. Even as a kid in New Jersey, I knew I'd live in San Francisco one day. It was its mystery -- its Barbary Coast stories about shanghaiing poor souls who got Mickey Finns in their watered-down beers in nasty, waterfront bars. It was also the tantalizingly rich literary history and its undercurent of menace and crime that I found so attractive. One of my heroes is Oscar Wilde. He invented the line, "It's an odd thing, but anyone who disappears is said to be in San Francisco." I'm still hoping to locate myself one day -- right here, in the City by the Bay.
