From the Publisher:
Broad conceptualization. Shapiro uses both classic and contemporary arguments and theories of social stratification to help students explore the dimensions of class, racial, and gender inequalities.
Emphasis on economic restructuring in the U.S. Highlighting key economic and social trends, Shapiro examines the effects of economic restructuring and public policies on inequality in contemporary American society.
Education as an illustration. In the final section, Shapiro looks at one institution - education - to illustrate how educational environments still manifest inequality, how various groups attempt to influence social change or maintain the status quo and how the dynamics of class, race, and gender intersect in an institutional context.
Critical thinking. Carefully edited selections are comprehensible and accessible while maintaining the integrity of the research, thus encouraging students to evaluate and analyze the ideas and findings presented.
Part introductions. Six part introductions guide the student's reading by briefly describing the readings and identifying the central themes emerging throughout the book.
New Selections. Twenty-two new selections (starred in the table of contents) include recent writings by Kathryn Edin and Laura Lein, William J. Wilson, Douglas Massey, Roger Waldinger, Edward Wolff, Barbara Risman, Mindy Stombler, and William Greider.
New issues covered include: the effects of global capitalism, the economic struggles of women on welfare, the widening gap between the wealthy and the poor, "the middle class squeeze", the debate about the ethnic enclave, the effects of deindustrialization on the continuing plight of the poor, and women and work across class and racial lines.
