Emphasis on economic restructuring in the U.S. Highlighting key economic and social trends, Shapiro examines the effects of economic restructuring and public policies on inequality in contemporary American society.
Education as an illustration. In the final section, Shapiro looks at one institution - education - to illustrate how educational environments still manifest inequality, how various groups attempt to influence social change or maintain the status quo and how the dynamics of class, race, and gender intersect in an institutional context.
