The Nursing Mother s Companion has been among the best-selling books in the field for 25 years (with more than one million copies sold!), and is respected and recommended by professionals and well loved by new parents for its encouraging and accessible style. Now, to celebrate the book s 25th anniversary, comes the sixth edition of this comprehensive and practical guide to breastfeeding. While nursing a baby may seem simple and instinctive, it often doesn t come naturally. In this book Kathleen Huggins equips breastfeeding mothers with all the information they need to overcome potential difficulties and nurse their babies successfully from the first week all the way to the toddler years, or somewhere in between. This fully updated and extensively revised edition provides new information on topics such as: Nursing after a cesarean How adoptive mothers can stimulate lactation to nurse the adopted baby How to restart breastfeeding after weaning (relactation) Nursing a near-term (3- to 5-week premature) baby Treating postpartum headaches and nausea Nutritional supplements to alleviate postpartum depression Sharing a bed with baby (co-sleeping) and the risk of SIDS Introducing solid foods Readers will also find, in addition to the previous editions chronologically arranged chapters, Huggins s indispensable problem-solving chapters, called 'survival guides' set off by coloured bands on the pages for quick reference. Also included are appendices on determining baby s milk needs in the first six weeks as well as the safety of various drugs during breastfeeding.
