BRUCE COCKBURN, the Canadian music legend, was born in 1945 in Ottawa, Ontario. He began his solo career with the self-titled album in 1970 released by Bernie Finkelstein's newly founded label True North Records. Cockburn's ever expanding repertoire of musical styles and skilfully crafted lyrics have been covered by such artists as Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Buffett, Elbow, Judy Collins, and k.d. lang. And he remains deeply respected for his activism on issues from native rights and land mines to the environment and Third World debt, working for organizations such as Oxfam, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, Friends of the Earth, and USC Canada.
Nic Dunlop is a freelance photographer specialising in human rights work.
LIVING WITH LANDMINES is a major investigation into the controversies surrounding one of the major political issues of the day. Focusing on the work already underway in Cambodia and Mozambique, the book reveals the high profile progress that has been made in the last few years, but more importantly uncovers some devastating news for the international agencies committed to eradicating the problem. On the one hand, governments, the UN and a few dedicated NGOs have devised successful techniques for cleaning up the millions of landmines already in place around the world, and these methods are absolutely safe and effective. The bad news, as this book reveals, is that they will never be able to finish the job. The system now in place relies entirely on foreign aid for funding and technical support, but the cleanup effort will take more than a century. It is inconceivable that the essential support can be maintained until the job is done.
