Review:
In a world where everything moves too fast, where we look forward to exotic and exciting holidays, a few weeks of camping seems mundane. However, when seen through the eyes of a little girl who had dreams of the kaleidoscope of Disneyland camping opens the door to a magical, timeless place. Nancy Hundal's text goes right to the heart of what it means to be a family, when personal desires must compromise with the realities of time and money [Brian Deines's] illustrations capture the hazy quality of summer, the heat shimmering off the page or the depth of night conveyed in an inky painting. I enjoyed reading this book aloud, savouring the beauty of the words and the juxtaposition of images Hundal has put into words the wonder and awe that is so difficult to articulate. This is a book that could be used in many settings, with a variety of age groups. The elegant text and lovingly-rendered illustrations make this a book that will be read again and again. - ResourceLinks

"Brian Deines's vibrant paintings capture perfectly the setting and mood of the camping experience. His nighttime illustrations play up a city-bred child's fear of the all-encompassing dark of the countryside, providing a wonderful contrast with his super-bright renditions of summer days. Hundal's narrative style is, as always, playful and poetic..best appreciated by teachers who wish to inspire their students to write about camping memories or to play with language as the author does. -- CM Magazine "Textured board comes through the paint and enhances the impressionistic aspects of Deines's oil/acrylic illustrations. Shifts in perspective and the dramatic use of light convey the atmosphere of warm woodsy days and star-filled nights around the campfire; this is truly a book of mood." -- Toronto Star "In a world where everything moves too fast, where we look forward to exotic and exciting holidays, a few weeks of camping seems mundane. About the Author:
Nancy Hundal's prose seems to dance off the pages in this valentine to camping. As with her previous bestsellers, Number 21 and Prairie Summer, Camping is filled with unique expressions and descriptive language so beautifully precise, it brings with it an almost electric shock of recognition. This is artist Brian Deines third collaboration with the author, following Prairie Summer and Number 21. And once again, his palette is filled with the warmth of sunny days and firelight and the sharp cold of water and star-filled nights. And his impressionistic brush strokes heighten the sense of being surrounded by and part of his gorgeous images.
