Excerpt from Twenty-First Annual Report of the Commissioners of Fisheries of the State of New York, 1893
At the suggestion of 'the commissioner in charge, fry were kept to be reared for breeding purposes, but in June an alarming mortality began among them, and nearly all died. A thorough investigation has been made into the causes for this mortality with the result of proving, at least to the satisfaction of the com missioner in charge, that it resulted from a want of sufficient fresh water and the high temperature of the ponds in which they were kept.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is the 21st annual report of the Commissioners of Fisheries within the state of New York, U.S.A., and details the work undertaken by the New York State Fish Commission over the last year. It comprises a review of the organizationās operations, including correspondence with applicants seeking fish to stock their local waters. Additionally, the report details the number of fish and eggs of each species distributed, and provides insight into relevant legislation and the proceedings of the game and fish protectors of New York. Of particular interest is the account of the obstacles encountered in obtaining sufficient eggs for shad hatching, and the resulting decrease in fry output. The author also discusses the challenge of balancing the desire to increase the catch of shad in the Hudson River, against the potential environmental damage caused by commercial fishing. The report concludes with a discussion of the importance of stocking inland waters with local species of fish to provide a valuable food source.
