Synopsis

THE ADDICTION MONSTER is a powerful tool for children 5 years and older that will help them understand the dynamics of chemical dependency. It draws the reader into the life of a little girl whose mother is struggling with drugs and alcohol. The child is taken to a therapist who helps her understand what her mother is struggling with. A monster appears in the story to help the little girl see that her mother has been tricked and brainwashed by her addiction. The book is written as a form of Narrative Therapy, which uses the tool of externalizing the problem and allows the child to see that the problem of chemical dependency is a separate entity (the Monster) from the mother. This book comes to life with the beautiful illustrations from cartoonist David Amptman. Also included are valuable resources as well as appendices.
