"No, no—there are depths, depths! The more I go over it, the more I see in it, and the more I see in it, the more I fear. I don’t know what I don’t see—what I don’t fear!”.... Henry James In “The Turn of the Screw”, Henry James has created a different kind of ghost story; what he later described as “the strange and sinister embroidered on the very type of the normal and easy.” Although the imagery is reminiscent of the gothic genre, the approach is more subtle, inviting the reader to ponder the true nature of the evil that may be present.

Review:
Much imitated ... but no one comes near the finesse of the master (The Times)

Timelessly unsettling (Guardian)
About the Author:
Henry James Jr. was born on April 15, 1843, in New York City. His father, Henry James Sr., was one of the best-known intellectuals of the 19th century. Young Henry was educated reading classic literature and studying with tutors in places like Geneva, London and Paris. When he was nineteen, he attended Harvard Law School, but preferred reading to studying law. He published his first story in 1864 and continued writing from there. In 1903, he wrote “The Ambassadors,” which he considered his masterpiece. “The Turn of the Screw” is his most famous. Eventually he settled in England near the outbreak of World War I, actually becoming a citizen in 1915. He died from complication from a stroke on February 28, 1916, at the age of 62, in London. He was cremated and interred in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
