I recommend this book if you're the owner of a wood stove and don't know if you're doing the right things with it; this was my predicament. If you're buying a stove, buy this book and read it beforehand. If you're selling stoves, buy a box (or more) of these books and give one away with each stove. The time and money investment, even if you only learn a few things, will pay itself back in almost no time, especially if you re using a lot of fuel. --Pete Cooper, Permaculture magazine
Whether you already have a wood-burning stove or you dream of having one, you'll find The Log Book really beneficial. Will Rolls shows you how to get the best results from your stove, and you'll no doubt end up with a far better understanding of how fire works than you did before (I say this because I'm always amazed at how many people don't understand what you need for a good fire (even in my own family! So I hope they're going to read this book). The Log Book also explains how wood can be harvested in a sustainable way and how there can be enough for everybody, as well as describing how not to create too much smoke or ash, and how to choose the best wood for your fire. Invite the element of fire into your home, safely, sustainably and economically! --Cygnus Community Review
This book contains everything you ever wanted to know about combustion, the science of burning, buying a wood stove, maintenance, and buying or producing your own fuel (a.k.a. wood). Rolls gives you tips on removing ash from the stove, using it in your compost pile, using it for pest control, and using it as a household cleaner. Even his information on buying a stove can transcend the ocean because he give specific details about stoves - size, rated heat output, primary and secondary sources of air, pre-heating, air-wash, boilers, direct air ventilation, and more - rather than making brand recommendations. --Deborah Niemann, The Thrifty Homesteader
Will Rolls first started in the biomass industry working for the Forestry Commission as a Regional Woodfuel Coordinator in the East Midlands. He moved to Forest Research in 2009 and currently works for the Biomass Energy Centre, a specialist technical advisory unit providing impartial advice on woodfuel and biomass production and use. The Log Book is a personal project, in response to many enquiries from the public, showing a poor level of understanding of how to use wood-burning stoves.
