AN EATING PLAN THAT CHANGES LIFESTYLES TO LOSE WEIGHT PERMANENTLY The L.A. Diet is a healthy eating plan that sets you on an unwavering course to permanent weight loss and lifelong health. It presents a comprehensive theory based on scientific evidence that explains why people become overweight. More importantly it explains how to alter diet and lifestyle to permanently shed unwanted body fat without ending up cold, tired, and hungry. The L.A. Diet Program will teach you how to eat generous portions of the right kinds of foods and to eat more frequently ("grazing") -- to satisfy your hunger--and still lose weight. The L.A. Diet explains why complex carbohydrate foods stoke your "metabolic furnace" to burn more calories. You'll learn why eating fat makes you fat by slowing metabolic heat production. This drives you to consume more calories and store the extra fat calories as insulating body fat. The L.A. Diet is based on an eating plan that includes low fat, high complex carbohydrate, high fiber foods. It encourages generous portions of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. The L.A. Diet introduces the concept of caloric density when evaluating foods rather than simply focusing on calories. Low calorically dense foods are those foods that have less concentrated calories based on their weight. You can enjoy generous portions of these foods --they'll fill you up, reduce appetite and hunger -- and help you lose weight. This is an important concept for so many dieters who are tired of restricting food intake, limiting portions, counting calories, and going hungry all day. The L.A. Diet explains why other diets don't work and why restricting caloric intake only creates an unresolvable conflict between the intellect and the appetite. The L.A. Diet tells you why dieting creates eating disorders and why eating disorders are not the cause of obesity but simply the result of irrational attempts to diet. The L.A. Diet takes the blame of past failures off the dieter's shoulders and places them squarely on the numerous irrational programs promising rapid weight loss while setting up the dieter for long term failure. This book first sets people straight about the myths and realities of weight loss and then provides a comprehensive "how to" section. The second part of The L.A. Diet explains how you can adopt a "grazing" style of eating which our bodies are designed by nature to thrive on. It contains scores of nutritional advice, eating plans, menus and recipes as well as nutrition charts to get you started. Tips on stocking your kitchen, balancing your menu plans for optimal nutrition, entertaining at home in style, travelling and making dining out a healthy experience. More than 100 recipes help you get started and show you how to graze to your heart's (and stomach's) content. You will learn how to enjoy food, lose weight, and improve your overall health. All of the recipes are created low in fat, cholesterol, sodium and sugar. You can enjoy guilt-free eating and at the same time lose weight. The best part also is that you will be eating foods that help reduce your risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and type II diabetes. The L.A. Diet promises enjoyable, delicious food, eating to satisfy your appetite, improved health, and permanent weight loss without the negative consequences of restricting calories, and feeling chronic hunger pangs. The L.A. Diet is truly an eating plan for a longer, healthier life! "Unlike so many books on the subject of dieting and weight control, The L.A. Diet undergirds all of its recommendations with scientific data and their explanation". --Hans Fisher, Ph.D. Chairman, Nutrition Department Rutgers University

About the Author:

Biography: James J. Kenney, Ph.D. James J. Kenney, Ph.D. received his Ph.D. in nutrition from Rutgers University and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He is a nutrition research specialist for the Pritikin Longevity Center in Florida. Dr. Kenney has traveled throughout the U.S. speaking at conferences for doctors, dietitians, and other health professionals on the relationship between diet and disease, and exposing the unscientific claims of many fad diets. He has published articles for scientific journals, including the Journal of Nutrition and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, as well as popular magazines, such as Self and Shape. He has been interviewed on many TV and radio media, such a Frontline and CNN News, and provides continuing professional education courses for dietitians, and other health professionals. “Today, I enjoy eating low fat foods as much as I did my steak-and-ice-cream diet of 35 years ago. Best of all, I’m in better health today, in my 60s, than I was in my 30s. Before changing my eating habits, my blood pressure was 150/100 and my cholesterol was over 300. Today, my blood pressure is generally below 110/70, my cholesterol is 180, and my HDL ‘good’ cholesterol is 80. Plus, I eat a lot of great-tasting, satisfying food and never go hungry. I weigh 157 pounds at 6’3”. That’s 40 pounds less than my weight in college. America would not have an epidemic of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease if we could get everyone on a low fat, high fiber eating plan as described in the The L.A. Diet program.” Biography: Diane Grabowski-Nepa, M.N.S., R.D. Diane Grabowski-Nepa is a Registered Dietitian with a Master’s of Nutritional Science Degree from Clemson University. She is the former Director of Nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center, Santa Monica, California. She has educated individuals and groups on nutrition, preventative health and exercise as a lifestyle program for over 25 years. She has contributed her expertise to a variety of magazines including Prevention, Shape, Fitness, Self and Men’s Health as well as TV shows such as Alive and Well, The Home and Family Show, and CNBC. She has also shared her nutrition knowledge as a contributing author to a children's book, The Sleepover Cookbook. She is an avid runner and has maintained her own weight loss of 50 pounds for over 30 years by adopting a low fat, high fiber eating plan as described in The L.A. Diet program.
