This is the tale of a small American town held in the grip of evil. Three children have vanished, abducted by a monster called The Fisherman (after a legendary murderer) with a craving for children's flesh. Ex-detective Jack Sawyer, dealing with his own personal problems (in which he is tormented by visions of another world), is keen to stay away from the horrors of this case, recognising how bad involvement will be for him. But--guess what?--Sawyer is soon supping full on the horrors, and the reader is in for an exhilarating (and highly disturbing) experience. Jack is a powerfully realised protagonist, and his journey into the dark world of The Fisherman is genuinely unsettling. Although more of King's fingerprints are on this one than Straub's (notably the conflicted hero, struggling with his own demons), the co-authors' individual styles merge indivisibly in this highly impressive chiller. --Barry Forshaw

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The bestselling collaboration between bestselling authors Stephen King and Peter Straub--an epic thriller about a small American town held in the grip of unspeakable evil--and the spectacular follow-up to the classic The Talisman. Twenty years ago, a boy named Jack Sawyer traveled to a parallel universe called the Territories to save his mother and her "Twinner" from an agonizing death that would have brought cataclysm to the other world. Now Jack is a retired Los Angeles homicide detective living in the nearly nonexistent hamlet of Tamarack, Wisconsin. He has no recollection of his adventures in the Territories, and he was compelled to leave the police force when a happenstance event threatened to awaken those long-suppressed and dangerous memories. When a series of gruesome murders occurs in western Wisconsin, reminiscent of heinous killings committed several decades earlier, Jack's buddy, the local chief of police, begs Jack to help find the killer. But are these new killings merely the work of a disturbed individual, or has a mysterious and malignant force been unleashed in this quiet town? What causes Jack's inexplicable waking dreams--if that is what they are--of robins' eggs and red feathers? As these cryptic messages become impossible to ignore, Jack is drawn back to the Territories and to his own hidden past. Jack Sawyer, a retired homicide detective living in rural Wisconsin, doesn't remember his boyhood journey into the parallel universe called the Territories. Jack is recruited to help find a brutal serial killer who is stalking the region and whose methods resemble those of Albert Fish who committed murders thirty years earlier, but is there an even more malignant force at work?
