Victor Hugo became a major influence in his life and gave him a taste for literature. During the time of Louis VIII Captain Fracasse was a soldier whose adventures portray bouts of chivalry, courage and a sense of adventure. The book has been described as a mystery fairy tale in which everyone lives happily ever after.
