Synopsis:

From Captain John Smith's own personal journals, readers will learn first-hand about Smith's capture and imprisonment by the Indians, his relationship with Pocahontas, and his explorations of the Chesapeake Bay, among other adventures. In this new annotated and illustrated edition, readers are treated to a fresh reexamination of Smith's accounts, drawing on his most important works, among them: "Proceedings of the English Colony of Virginia" (1612), "Generall Historie of Virginia" (1624), and "The True Adventures and Observations of Captain John Smith" (1630). With the upcoming 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, a whole new generation of readers and history buffs will be seeking out more information about Smith and his contemporaries. This edition allows them to access him in the most direct way possible. Historian John Thompson offers a rich and detailed portrait of the man, his role in the founding and governance of Jamestown, and his explorations of the New World. Then he guides us through an annotated and illustrated selection of Smith's most important and compelling writings.

Together the book presents a complete portrait of one of America's most intriguing founding fathers.
